What Is Your USP?

Do you have a Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?  If not, now’s the time to get started as you blueprint your path to success.

It really doesn’t matter if you are in the business of selling real estate, brokering mortgages, flipping houses, or for that matter, doing construction labor work – you still need to stand out and excel in a way only you can do.  You need to define just what makes you special and unique.

What are your opinions and how do they differ from both your peers and competitors?  Think of your USP as being sort of your own personal mission statement.

The Mortgage Cicerone blog just had a nice post on the topic, especially targeted to those in the loan business.  You’ll see that you should shy away from trying to be a jack of all trades.  Instead, it’s best to focus and specialize on one specific and targeted niche.  Be the master of your own market.

Overall, the advice and logic on creating and integrating your USP is very sound.  However, you might be a little leery at one statement that seems to contradict itself.

The post expresses:

“Whatever type of loan product or service a customer needs at the time, your USP should be so strong it instantaneously brings you into their thoughts whenever they think or talk about it.”

Do you spot any contradiction in that statement?

Again, isn’t it better to be an expert on a specific niche or product rather than bending your USP to cater to any “product or service a customer needs at the time?”  Of course, I’ve probably completely overanalyzed the statement, but I did want to briefly make note of it.

In a related post, The Mortgage Cicerone nicely exemplifies the logic and creation of one individual’s specifically strong USP.  Take a look and you’ll probably come up with several ideas of your own on how you can apply your unique experience to a niche that only you can effectively dominate.

So what is your USP?

Each person has one.  Put yourself ahead in the game by identifying and getting yours in writing immediately.  Give it a quick read every morning before you start your work and it will be almost impossible not to improve your level of success!
