How to Survive the Holidays While Selling Your Home

Selling your home over the holiday season?  Sure, it’s statistically relevant that buyers are few and far between during the month of December.  They’re just too busy getting ready and celebrating the holidays themselves.  But sometimes we have no choice when to have our house on the market.  If you’re home is up for sale for the holidays, take advantage where you can.  Here’s how…

Combine Entertaining With Selling.

Even though potential buyers aren’t exactly knocking the doors down looking at your house this time of year, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to tactfully show off your property.  Still want to host the annual Christmas party at your home as always?  Perfect!  Just prepare your home for its very best showing and subtlety make it know that your home is indeed on the market, maybe with a low key stack of flyers by the entryway or another high traffic space.

Tasteful Outdoor Christmas Lights Can Help.

When the little things count, have the most beautiful and tasteful Christmas lights in your neighborhood.  They’ll naturally attract the eye of those driving by, bringing always appreciated attention to your for sale house that might normally escape the eye.  Again, the key is being graceful rather than going all out.  But do make sure the for sale sign is very visible in the landscape, maybe even giving it a small spotlight of its own.

Show the Year Round Potential.

No one lives in a home that’s decorated for the holidays all year long.  As much as it might conflict with your festive nature, tone the décor back a bit this year to allow the home itself to shine through.  Also worth a try would be sharing a vision of the home during spring and summer – display a few photos of lush green landscaping and colorful flower beds in a conspicuous place.

When All Else Fails, Refresh Your Listing.

Another alternative that has been proven to work before is removing your listing from the market altogether during the winter months.  This tactic is especially worth consideration if your home has already been on the market for some time and is beginning to get stagnant.  Take advantage of the break to restage and prepare for a relaunch, perhaps a month or two into the new year, bringing all new life to a previously tired listing.

In Conclusion…

Even though fewer buyers are home shopping during the holidays doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of those that are.  Think outside the box.  Christmastime presents all kinds of unique opportunities to show off the property.
