Effective Podcasts for Real Estate Agents – Part 1

Those in the real estate business are often the first to embrace and adapt to new technology.  That said, many of you are already quite familiar with Podcasting and even how it can benefit your bottom line.  But just in case, stick with us as we start from the very beginning…

What is a Podcast?

Catching up with the lingo, a Podcast is technically the name for an audio program that automatically downloads according to your settings with Apple’s iTunes software.  They were originally intended to work with the ever popular iPod, but adapt perfectly to work with other portable mp3 players and also for on computer listening.

So generally, the term Podcast is used to describe a downloadable audio program.  For the purpose of this blog post, we’ll be discussing audio Podcasts only, but later we’ll be doing a feature on excellent Video Podcasts.

Why Should I Podcast?

Let’s face it, in today’s toughening real estate market, agents who don’t try and grab every edge possible will join the ranks of those leaving the trade sooner or later.  It’s not that the successful absolutely depend on every single gimmick or every technology created to connect with their customers, but the innovations can definitely be used to compliment solid traditional people and sales skills.  The Podcast is a simple yet effective way to get in front of a target audience and tell them you’re an expert on the market (through context, not blatant bragging).

What makes Podcasts so effective?

  • Very easy to share with listeners – Chances are, more people have reliable access to their computer these days than an AM radio.  The audience of your show will find it simple to grab their own copy and tell their friends about the show.
  • Easy to produce – Podcasts are notoriously easy to self produce.  All you need is a decent quality microphone, free recording software, your computer, and a script or notes for the show planned ahead of time.
  • Cheap to create – Again, the only purchase you’ll probably need to make is for a decent quality microphone costing no more than $100.
  • Better potential reach than traditional radio – Even though real estate agents will probably benefit the most from topically sticking to their local or niche market expertise, the reach of Podcasts is practically unlimited.  Just try pulling that off with a Saturday morning local radio show!
  • Able to stick to a convenient schedule – You audience will look forward to regular new shows, but the best part is that you can create them whenever you choose.  Furthermore, the listeners can download and listen to your Podcast whenever they choose – unlike a regular radio show only scheduled during a certain (and often prohibitive) timeslot.
  • Freedom – Listeners can tune in at home, on the go, in the office, in the car, or wherever and whenever!

Don’t Dismiss the Podcast

I know some of you are asking, “Why would I even bother with having my own audio Podcasts when Video Podcasts are the next big thing?”

Well, Video Podcasts do have their own set of benefits, but it’s kind of hard to watch a video program while driving, out on a walk, working in the office, etc.  But the tried and true audio program can shine in all of these situations and more.  People like to listen – It’s just human nature.

Podcasting is certainly nothing new, but it is still completely relevant.  Seriously consider how Podcasts might help you build more credibility in the long run while immediately helping to boost your bottom line.

Up next is Part 2 of our Effective Podcasts for Real Estate Agents feature – highlighting a few excellent Podcasts, as well as bringing to light some not so great examples.
